MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION WEEK – NEW YORK: WHAT TO EXPECT

When asking a New Yorker what every woman looks forward to the most each year, undoubtedly the reply will always be Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

Twice a year, the most stylish, creative, cut throat minds get together to put on a show compiled of his/her most prized designs. Over 100,000 Editors, bloggers, stylists, and fashion lovers unite to be at the forefront of history.[1] This is the moment where designers allow their best work to come to life from the pages of a book, to the runways of Lincoln Center.

To me, Fashion Week is an expose of foreshadowing in what is expected to come in the future; a glimpse into what I, as a stylist, should be adding into my wardrobe as staples for the upcoming season. Viewers at Fashion Week have the ability to feel a multitude of emotions regarding the trends based on the styles that the designers are choosing to incorporate into their collections. Often times I find myself asking, “Is this really what I’m going to be seeing in stores internationally in 6 months?”  While other times I’m ecstatic regarding the comeback of trends from the 80’s, 90’s with an addition of a modern day approach.

Tomorrow, Feb. 7, 2013, marks the official kick off of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center. I can’t help but have high expectations of what we’re going to be seeing for the Fall/Winter 2013 collections. Last year, Pantone declared Tangerine Tango as 2012’s Color of the Year, we found that color all over the Spring 13’ runways back in September. This year, Pantone declared Emerald Green as 2013’s Color of the Year. The gem tone is anticipated as being a bold statement on the runways this week.

Another expectation is that the Peplum isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon; Even Beyoncé rocked a Peplum Lace Body Suit during her halftime performance during the Big Game on Sunday. (Go Ravens!) Considering we’ve seen a striking amount of Peplum on the last few Fashion Week Runways, I’m expecting there will be some newer silhouettes incorporated with the style, in that aspect, I’m very interested to see what the Designers came up with this season.

Aside from trends, there are a few noteworthy designers that we’re anticipating seeing back at NYFW: John Galliano, and Betsey Johnson. While the Former Dior creative mind Galliano was stripped from his title a few years ago, WWD broke the news last month that he was spotted spending quite a bit of time at the Oscar de la Renta Studio. With Betsey Johnson filing bankruptcy and closing her boutiques, I had a feeling we wouldn’t be seeing the last of her. Shockingly enough, her fall/winter line will be showing on Feb. 11, 2013, 5 p.m. I know I’m not alone when I say that I’m very excited to see what she brings to the table this week. [2]

All in preparation for NYFW, Independent Fashion Bloggers set up a phenomenal Panel discussion for their two-time annualIFBCON (#IFBCON to follow on twitter) This year, it’s scheduled for Feb. 6 & 7, at the Altman Building on W. 18th St. The bloggers and influencers selected as panelists will be sharing how they grew their brands, started their businesses and what they have learned.[3] The IFBCON has served as a kick off to Fashion Week since 2010. Not only is attending this event an incredible experience, but it also gives future insight to what the Fashion Industry is doing relative to the media. IFBCON will be able to be viewed live online, check out more information here:http://heartifb.com/ifb-conference. Ps. I love seeing the trends and styles the bloggers/street stylists bring with them!

In addition to this enormous amount of Fashion Week insight that I’ve provided, if you’d like to watch the streams of Live Shows online, or maybe just keep up with time and location detail – have a look at the schedule for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week here.
